Though I have a lot of differences with the principles and decisions of Gandhi, the one common ideology which made my heart feel intimate to his soul is "the TRUTH". I am still surviving with a hope of ray in this blue sphere only to strive for truth. In fact, truth means happiness for me. The whole-hearted content and happiness.
Gandhi is the only leader I heard in world history who preached truth. In my view, that makes him differ from the rest. I am always thankful to my common sense which prevents me from worshipping anybody (including God and Gandhi) so that I can see the truth as a whole in its pure naked form using both my eyes.
I have no great idea of making Gandhi as the reason of getting independence to the nation. Exaggerating Gandhi's role is none other than politics. To be frank, Gandhi himself would have known this well. The success of Gandhian way in independence war is a mere co-incidence. The same co-incidence got replicated in South Africa too.
The history of India's freedom struggle saw a lot of methodologies in different phases. When the British decided to free India because of some different reasons (though got a victory in second world war, a heavy damage was hooked to it), fortunately, the trend at that time was Gandhi's "Ahimsa". Thats it.
I have a lot of criticisms on his stand on few political situations, his holy avatar image, his attitude towards personal life (especially his wife), few of his statements on religion and some incidents happened in his life. In spite of all those things, he still stands truely high in my conscience (equaled with very few).
Other than this "peace keeping" face, a cople of other things found attractive with him. One is his autobiography - "My experiments with Truth". Its really made of truth and truth only. But there is a discrepancy on that too. Everything what he said is truth - but he didn't tell all the truth. I mean it.
But still, I don't have any courage to write mine to his truth levels. Not only me - no one dares, I believe. It can be compared to any good literary works in English. The other autobiography from which I encountered the same stunning effect because of its nude truth is that of retired sex worker from Kerala - Nalini Jameela.
The other one is Gandhi's quotations. I love to read and chew often, a handful of them. In fact, one of his quotation (reply to the question "What do I think of Western civilisation?") gave me the initial spark to start writing SarKar's Philosophy (Sorry, Mr.Gandhi!). His answer was "I think it would be a very good idea.”
A few of his quotations which I remember now (means obviously, I love them all):
“Be the change you want to see in the world.”
“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
“Patience means self-suffering.”
"Hate the sin, love the sinner."
“Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong.”
“The law an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”
“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed.”
“All crime is a kind of disease and should be treated as such.”
"Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes."
“The greatness of a nation's moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
“Nearly everything you do is of no importance, but it is important that you do it.”
“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems.”
(Note that the last two quotes fit the current IT industry aptly)
I should thank Kamal Haasan on this day for movie "Hey Ram" as it triggered me to revisit the image of Gandhi from all aspects in a deeper fashion and configure it's reality. Another quotation of Gandhi which I missed to mention above is "Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."
I think Gandhi missed THAT happiness in his life. Hey Ram!

I appreciate your carefulness in avoiding "Mahatma", "ji" and "father of nation".
Only two kind of persons can really love Gandhi in this world. First is one who uses the above words each and every time, when he says about Gandhi. He will be the one who gets transformed after reading Gandhi. Second is one who admires him, after identifying himself with Gandhi. He is a self made person.
I admire his lines, "You must be the change, that you want to see in the world".
